AYSO EXTRA in Region 70

What is the AYSO EXTRA program? AYSO_EXTRA_Logo_shield

The AYSO EXTRA program is designed for skilled players who want competitive play and increased training within the AYSO philosophies. Region 70’s EXTRA program mimics our tournament team structure: players must tryout to make a team. Teams will compete against other competitive EXTRA teams in a circuit against other Regions across Souther California. Travel is required for games, potentially on both Saturdays and Sundays.

Because the EXTRA competition runs at the same time as the regular AYSO program, players who participate in EXTRA are not eligible to participate in the regular season, including playoffs and All Stars. EXTRA teams have a separate section-wide tournament and may enter competitive tournaments of their own choosing. EXTRA teams are coached by AYSO volunteer coaches, with assistance from professional trainers.

Because of the increased time commitment, game travel and higher level of competition, EXTRA is not appropriate for every player, and we only recommend players with a passion for the game.

When are tryouts?

Tryouts for the 2025 EXTRA season will be held during the spring (schedule below). In 2025, we will only hold tryouts for those divisions where there has been significant interest in forming a team from both players and volunteers. These will be for Boys U13 (born in 2013) and Boys U12 (born in 2014). All players are welcome to try out who meet the age requirement. There is no requirement to have played in Region 70 last season. Interested players must attend at least one tryout and are welcome to attend both. Additional tryouts may be scheduled to finalize teams.

Current 2026 EXTRA Tryout Schedule
All tryouts will be held on the turf field at Westwood Park
1350 S. Sepulveda Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90025

It is important to emphasize that holding a tryout does not guarantee that a team will be formed in that specific age group. Factors such as the number of available players, qualified coach and referee volunteers, and overall division registration numbers will impact the decision to form teams. In the event that EXTRA teams cannot be formed in specific age groups, all registered players will be placed in the regular program for the upcoming season.

Please have players wear soccer attire (including a plain T-shirt (any color) and shin guards) and bring a ball. Contact our Regional Commissioner Derek Chaiken (aysoderek@gmail.com) with any questions.
